Product Description

Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, in a full cast dramatization, on CD for the first time!

As much a part of Christmas as mistletoe, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol warms the heart of listeners with its tale of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.

This enchanting, full-cast recording brings Dickens' London to life on a Christmas Eve when Mr. Scrooge, who loves money more than people, is visited by his old, dead business partner Marley and three Ghosts who show him Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come.

Through the fine characterizations of acclaimed actors led by Sir Ralph Richardson and Paul Scofield, Scrooge's journey through his life and the lives of those around him charms and delights the listener as he, and they, learn the true meaning of Christmas.

About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of England's greatest writers. Best known for his classic serialized novels, such as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, Dickens wrote about the London he lived in, the conditions of the poor, and the growing tensions between the classes. He achieved critical and popular international success in his lifetime and was honored with burial in Westminster Abbey.

From AudioFile
This dramatization of DickensÕs well-loved classic carries with it the familiar flavor of Christmases past and present. The performances are well-handled by the various professionals, most especially Sir Ralph Richardson. Although the production is shortened so much as to be potentially confusing for those rare listeners who donÕt know the story, the ancient truths within still come through. Music highlights the party scenes, bells chime as Scrooge walks the London streets, and the ghosts are introduced with eerie (if a little dated) sound effects from the great beyond. Overall, this rendition is charming and nostalgic, effectively delivering the beloved story in a format perfect for our sound-bite society. This version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL is ideally suited to a family listening on each Christmas Eve to come. A.A. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

So So Audiobook transfer4
I bought this disc of Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" to replace a cassette
in my collection that I have been having the pleasure of listening to for a long time. Sir Ralph Richardson and company deliver an abridged performance of the work, done as a radio play of sorts. The recording done in the Sixties is a little dated in the violin sound effects, but the acting makes up for a great deal here. My only complaint is that when
the recording was originally released it was done in Two channel bin-aurally, the tranfer sounds like they attepted to force it into stereo with a curious sounding outcome. Thats why only 4 stars instead of 5. This does not however diminish the performances of the players, or mar the story itself.

Absolutely the best!5
If this is what I think it is, it is the hands-down best rendition of this most essential of stories. I feel it is better by far than any visual dramatization. When I read the original, I hear the voices of these readers. They are simply irreducible.

I have listened to this rendition every year for the last 40 years - needless to say, this is an indispensible part of my Christmas. I close my eyes and am transported to 19c London. It is magic.
