From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up—This guide to the phenomenally popular series uses a loose narrative structure to introduce the cats: three kittens have lost their way en route to Star Clan and are told stories by a mysterious narrator known only as Rock. The telling of the tales is organized by clan, giving a full-page overview of each character's place in the saga. While this book is a handy companion for fans of the series, it is absolutely mind-boggling for anyone who has not read at least one of the novels. The dizzying number of felines and their relationships is difficult to keep track of, and events mentioned make no sense without prior knowledge of the books. The lack of family trees is unfortunate-there are by now several generations of cats, as well as cross-mating among the clans-and there is a breakdown of the naming codes used to distinguish the warriors; titles such as "kit," "paw," and "star" change as the cats move up within the hierarchy of the clans. One element that will be evident to new readers is the ferocity of these animals' lives, which is in keeping with the tone and spirit of the novels. The full-color portraits of these cats are spectacular. They show these characters to be exciting, vibrant, and unique, and will interest new readers much more than the tone-heavy, mysterious musings of the narrator.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Awesome Illustrations!
This book begins with three StarClan kits accidentally wandering into Rock's caves. He offers to tell them about some of the most important cats in the recent history of the Clans. The rest of the book is divided into sections for ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, and cats outside the Clans.I enjoyed the narrative style;I felt like I was one of the kits;and I loved the illustrations!!They were really cool! Although people who know all about the series will know the info about the cats already, the pictures make the buy worth it(in my opinion). And if you have a friend who hasn't read the books but wants to try them out,get them this book. It's a great introduction to the characters.
It's finally here!!!!
When Cats of the Clans came, I sat down and read it with my friend, Gabrielle, who is also a Warriors fan, on my couch (which is the same spot I read Secrets of the Clans) and we were emmersed into a beautiful world of fantastically painted pieces of art that displayed many of our favorite heroes and loated vilians.
I admired the cleverness of how the book was set up. Rock, a long dead ancient cat from before the Clans came to the forest is in his cave on his part of StarClan when three kits who died at young ages from different Clans (including Bluestar's dead son, Mosskit) wander into Rock's cave. It is to dark for the kits to go back to StarClan's grounds, so Rock passes the time by telling them about cats of the clans.
We get to see gorgeous paintings of cats from Firestar and Tigerstar to kittypets like Smudge and BloodClan cats like Scourge. When we finally hut the book, I was able to gather my thoughts and opinions about this book.
The paintings are well done, but some pictures hide most of the cat, like Tigerstar's. He is peering out of a hole in some rock, scowling at us. I wanted to have pictures of the cats fully made, not half of them. and like Graystripe and Millie's pictures, you only see a bit of their heads. With Leapardfur, you couldn't really see why she's got leapard in her name. And there are NO pcitures of some of my favored warriors, like Whitestorm (he's AWESOME!!!!!), Lionheart, Redtail, and Spottedleaf. This really got me annoyed.
Other cats didn't look like how I pictured them. Silverstream looked fat from how we saw her and not quite as pretty as the manga books, and we don't get to see Cloudtail or Brook, though they're listed.
But still, it is a very well done piece of art, and I tip my hat to the painter and author. Alas, it could have been better (and thicker- it was WAY too short) but the author ignored this.
Yes, yes, buy this product. You'll love it, though be disappointed at some parts.

Incredible Art
The art in this book was amazing. I loved seeing all the cats that I had read about for so long. Kudos to the illustrator for mostly keeping to the descriptions of cats. (One exception: Scourge) My only problem with it would be the fact that they frequently only showed upper body or face shots, instead of the full-body pictures on many cats. (AKA Sandstorm) The writing, however, was a different story. DO NOT EXPECT THIS TO BE A FIELD GUIDE. This is simply a book of one-page bios of each major cat. I like the way they presented it, (Rock speaking to three StarClan kits) but it did not tell us anything new. However, the art definitly makes this worth the buy.
