Editorial Reviews

Review
"Harry Brand, architect and planner: "Cohen, drawing on his own broad experience in the practical study of urban conservation, has assembled a rich variety of examples, copiously illustrated. From these he has distilled the principles which govern the practice of conservation, based on clearly defined urban elements. A very useful manual for all concerned with the theory and practice of this complex and elusive art."

--Architect/planner Harry Brand

Cities and structures can be revitalized without losing their essence, character, and historic flavor. Veteran planner/architect Nahoum Cohen--who's designed projects in Jaffa; Tel Aviv; Capua, Italy; and San Francisco, among many other urban locales--proves it in this strategy- and example-filled guide.

A comprehensive manual for the planning and architectural professional, Urban Planning Conservation and Preservation covers the rehabilitation and preservation not only of buildings, but of entire neighborhoods and cities. This book provides two valuable sets of tools. The first helps you analyze key elements of the urban environment--street grids, public areas, building styles, land uses, and other factors. Then this guide integrates (these) analytic elements into strategies for working with public and commercial interests to bring about beneficial preservation programs that save city neighborhoods.
