From the Inside Flap
Preface

This book is a complete guide to IBM's DB2 Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition. DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Enterprise-Extended Edition (EEE) is available on AIX, Windows NT, and Sun Solaris. This book, however, was written from a UNIX, specifically AIX operating system perspective. There may be some differences in the implementation of the DB2 UDB EEE product on these operating systems, but since they are not part of the certification testing for the IBM UDB for Cluster Exam, they are not covered in this publication. If you would like to become a Certified IBM Advanced Technical Expert on DB2 Universal Database V5, or you would simply like to understand the powerful DB2 UDB EEE product, then read on.
This guide helps you prepare for one of the tests in the the IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert - DB2 Universal Database V5 program. Performance Tuning and Problem Determination - These chapters look at the tuning parameters in a cluster environment. For complex queries, you need to understand what is happening during the execution of that query. The output from the explain facilities is detailed so that you not only understand what is happening during execution, but you can also learn how to influence the optimizer to improve performance. How This Book was Created This book was a joint effort between the Austin ITSO (International Technical Support Organization) and the IBM Toronto Lab. The ITSO is a group within IBM whose mission is to provide skill transfer on new products and emerging technology on a worldwide basis. We provide direct feedback to the IBM software labs as we gather input from various groups of DB2 users, including IBM support personnel, customers and business partners. The ITSO provides a working envionment for interested individuals to work with new IBM software products. These individuals may include IBM employees and customers. Each team develops a workshop or book, known as a redbook. The ITSO provides a working envionment for interested individuals to work with new IBM software products. Customer Reviews

A must buy book about DB2 Clusters5
There are no other books on the market quite like this one. Although geared towards DB2 Cluster Certification this book also offers the reader a lot of readable informatiuon on setting up a clustered DB2 enviroment.

It is very well laid out and an easy read. It expects a certain amount of understanding of DB2 UDB already, however, there is a lot of detailed information as and when required to help you along.

No serious DB2 Developer/DBA/Consultant should be without this book if they wish to understand how DB2 EEE works and can be configured.

I have just about every DB2 book published and am happy to answer any questions you may have about Certification or the books I have reviewed. Please feel free to e-mail me.

It's not all there......2
After pouring over the book, and practicing the test questions over and over, I still did not pass the certification. I found that a great number of the questions asked during the certification were NOT covered in the book. The sample questions did not address the many SQL and EXPLAIN questions on the certification exam. It would be nice to not only have the answers to the sample questions, but also the "why is this the correct answer" information as well. Since this book was written with the knowledge of IBM, why didn't the authors provide a representative sample of ALL of the certification test questions, instead of just a few? The certification test is broken into several groups. While the book identifies these sections, it does not organize the questions in the same fashion.

The book appears to be a rehash of the IBM EEE class that is still being taught today. Also, the current level of DB2 is 7.2, the book is written to version 5.

On the plus side, it is the only book for DB2 EEE certification.

Good reference material. BUT...3
This is a useful reference manual. However, it doesn't appear to be as tailored to the cluster exams as it might claim.

Also -- and more painfully, IMO -- this book STILL uses concepts as of version 5. It's 2002 and the book hasn't been updated from 1998 principles. That's an eternity in this business! Nevertheless, many of the same concepts apply, but it is still in desperate need of a revision to include UDB V7.
