Spanish-born Félix Candela (1910–1997) is acknowledged as a master builder who designed and built innovative thin shell concrete roof structures in Mexico. This book goes further, however, hailing Candela as a structural engineer whose elegant forms should be considered works of art.
This handsomely designed volume begins by presenting the lineage of master builders and structural artists who preceded him, including those from the period of the Industrial Revolution. The authors then examine Candela’s life, studies, and experiences, and analyze his early thin shell designs. They focus on the geometric form that Candela eventually used to create his most important works, examine several of the structures in detail, compare them to the works of other contemporary structural artists, and discuss the most important features of his legacy: the conservation of natural resources by minimizing materials; the reduction of cost by intimately connecting design to construction, and the creation of beautiful forms.

Visual Masterpiece, Thought-Provoking Read
Even if you're not into concrete shell, it's a great book in general just to learn about the material and its master.
The visual content of the book is just so compelling that you'll find yourself stopping at almost every page. The flow of images creates a fascinating narrative, taking you through precedent projects, Candela's youth and subsequent growth as an archit--err, "structural artist" as G&B puts it. In addition to the "structural art" photos, the construction photos are fascinating. They do wonderful justice to Candela's thinking, decision making, and the details of his work. The force diagrams also sing beautifully; highly informative without being overly complex.
Despite the overall engineering bent of the book, G&B balances it quite nicely with other subjects: history, engineering and "structural art" artfully work with eachother for a great reading/looking experience.
This is a must have for any structural artist's or, dare I say, architect's library.
Hats off to Garlock and Billington. The architectural world needs more books like this one.
