Grade 1-3 The Yorkshire vet tells the story of two sheepdog puppies, Gyp and Sweep, born on Mr. Wilkin's farm. Sweep is taken by another family and turns out to be an excellent sheepdog. His brother remains at Mr. Wilkins and never barks. At the sheepdog trials Gyp sees Sweep and he "woofs" in recognitionthe only time in his life that Gyp ever barks. The pretty, softly colored realistic illustrations nicely convey the feeling of the English countryside and the character of the dogs. This low-key story is similar in format and mood to Herriot's Moses the Kitten (St. Martin's Pr, 1984) and will appeal more to adult Herriot fans than young listeners. About the Author
Alf Wight ("James Herriot") was born on 3 October 1916 in Sunderland, near Newcastle. However the family moved to Yoker, a suburb of Glasgow, when Alf was three weeks old. He attended Glasgow Veterinary School. He moved to Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in 1940, to work for Donald Sinclair ("Siegfried Farnon") at his practice at 23 Kirkgate. He married Joan Danbury ("Helen Alderson") on 5 November 1941 at St Mary Magdalene church in Thirsk. They had two children, Jim (born 1943) and Rosie (born 1947): Jim is a vet who used to work in the Sinclair/Wight practice and Rosie is a General Practitioner (family doctor). Alf died on 23 February 1995 of prostate cancer at his house, "Mirebeck", in the village of Thirlby near the town of Thirsk that became famous in his books as "Darrowby".

An wonderful read!
This book was a favorite of my childhood and I still read it to this day. I pick it up somtimes at night or just when I want a quick read! All children will love this story.

AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT
This particular Herriot story has been and is one of my favoites out of his several books. There is something quite charming and human here that is difficult to put a finger on. Being a dog lover of course helps, but this is the type of story that will appeal to just about everyone. Only One Woof is the story of a sheep dog who did just that, uttered only one woof in his entire life. This wonderful story has here been made into a children's books with wonderful illustrations by Peter Barrett. The art work alone is worth the price of the book. I have read this one to classes and it is universally love by the kids. I highly recommend this one.

A Delightful Retelling Of A Favorite Story
When I first read the chapter in an earlier Herriot book relating the story of the silent young sheepdog, I was inexplicably moved. Later in life, when I had the extreme good fortune to become the owner of a border collie pup, I named her Gyp in honor of Mr. Herriot's wonderful tale. This particular version for children is a delight for readers young and old alike. Highly recommended!
