Product Description

Careful study of the Nat Turner slave rebellion of 1831 reveals much about master, slaves, and the relationship between them in the antebellum South. The central document in this volume — Nat Turner's confession follwing the rebellion in Virginia — is supported by newspaper articles, trial transcripts, and excerpts from the diary of Virginia governor John Floyd.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"Professor Greenberg has done a polished and fascinating treatment of the topic.... Most praise worthy is the way in which he deals with issues of evidence and interpretation in a very sophisticated yet fundamental way to make the whole question of documents and their uses a provocative adventure for the student/reader."

Great book5
This is a terrific book. The introduction is particularly insightful. This is a good book for anybody interested in the history of slavery and slave rebellions.

A Historical but tedious book2
I love history, so naturally this book sounded interesting to me. I learded a lot from it. It was a very informative, well written book about one of America's strongest Slaves. I admire his ablility to stand behind his beliefs, and this book interprets his life with grace and integrity. I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading dense books packed with history.
