Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
In another effort from this talented British team, plump, likable Jasper the cat heads for the toy store with his birthday money. The question is: What will he choose? A clockwork mouse? A robot? A jack-in-the-box? After much deliberation, he finally settles on a black-and-white toy kitten that looks just like him. Children will sympathize with Jasper's dilemma and appreciate his sound choice. The text is printed in oversized type, and Inkpen's engaging watercolors are surrounded by a generous amount of white space, which gives the book an air of freshness and exuberance. Ages 3-5.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-- Jasper the cat is going to the toyshop with his birthday money to select a new toy. The uncluttered, playful watercolor illustrations are quite effective in making each choice look appealing; large type and lots of white space add to the attractive format. Preschoolers will enjoy the shopping excursion and giving their own ideas on how to spend birthday money. The British terms "toyshop" and "clockwork mouse" will not be in listeners' vocabulary, but the meaning is clear in the illustration. A pleasant offering for toddler story hours. --Janie Schomberg, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Very cute!4
This book shows us a kitty named Jasper and he is out at the store trying to decide what to buy with his birthday money. It has adorable illustrations that are good at catching the attention of children and keeping them focused on what is happening in the book. In the end Jasper decides to take home a stuffed likeness of himself!
