Product Description

Where's the best place to try out the most powerful torch there is? Kipper and Tiger decide that it must be in the middle of the woods at the bottom of Big Hill. But just what is that big animal with horns that they can see on the other side of the tent? Perhaps it would be safer to camp in Kipper's room? Kipper first appeared on four legs in 1989 in the Mick Inkpen timeless picture book The Blue Balloon. The picture book, Kipper, first published in 1991, made him the star of the show. He is now a classic picture character now, loved by children the world over in the same way that Thomas the Tank or Peter Rabbit are loved. There is a whole range of Kipper books to choose from. classic picture books, TV tie in picture books, novelty board books, sticker books, pop up books and much much more. Kipper is on CITV: the new animation series is due to broadcast in autumn 2000 with repeats of past series starting in the summer. Kipper's animation series has been awarded the BAFTA award for best children's animation. Kipper is everyone's favourite puppy!

Amazon.com Review
Mick Inkpen captures the delicious scariness of what might go bump in the night in Kipper's Monster. The trouble starts when Tiger and Kipper pick up a picture book that begins, "Deep in the middle of the dark, dark wood, there lived a horrible, horrendous, terrible, tremendous..." Just to torture themselves further, they decide to camp in the woods that night with the book. Of course, once outside, Tiger has second thoughts, especially with imagined bears, a tremendous "Screech!" coming from a hole in a tree, and the shadow on the tent wall of something with horns! (It's just a snail.) They don't get very far in their reading of the scary book until they're safely back in Tiger's bedroom. As ever, Inkpen's drawings are charming and expressive, and the happy ending will make youngsters feel safe and cozy. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
A scary storybook inspires Kipper to go camping in Kipper's Monster by Mick Inkpen, but when the frightened pup drops his flashlight, the image of a tiny snail seems supersized.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-Another Kipper tale that's sure to please young listeners. The pup and his friend Tiger are so eager to try out a new flashlight in the dark that they head to the woods to spend the night in a tent. As Kipper reads from his scary book, "Deep in the middle of the dark, dark wood, there lived a horrible-," the two are frightened first by the screech of an owl and then by a terrifying shadow on the tent. While Tiger squeals in alarm, brave Kipper investigates, only to find that the shadow was caused by the flashlight shining on a small snail. They go home and read the rest of the story, safely ensconced in Tiger's bedroom. Bright, simple illustrations surrounded by plenty of white space give the book a light, airy, uncomplicated quality. Children will relate to the animals' fear and will share in their relief. A good choice for storyhours.

Kipper's Monster - a page turner for my 2 1/2 year old5
My son loved this book. In fact, we picked it up at the library and I have to admit I was concerned about the "monster" thing. In fact, he loved it so much, I'm buying it for it. We gave our son a flashlight and later that evening we used the flashlight and got under the covers like Kipper and Tiger and he absolutely loved reading the book under the covers with the flashlight! I also used the flashlight to show him how to make shadow puppets, similiar to the snail shadow in the book. He thought all of it was way cool! We read it quite often. My son did not find it "scary" as the previous reviewer, but again, each child is different.

Not my favourite Kipper book.3
We borrowed this one from the library. In this book, Tiger has a new torch (flashlight, for the non-Brits). He wants to try it out so Kipper and Tiger go for a camp-out in the woods. They are attempting to read a "scary" story, but then they hear a loud "SCREECH" in the woods. The noise is not explained in the book, although the pair guess that it must have been an owl that made the noise. Next a shadow appears on the tent wall. It turns out to be a snail - not scary at all! Finally, the two friends return home and read the book inside the house. Even though this book has a "safe" ending, the screech noise, "scary" book, and shadow on the tent wall did not make this a book that my 3 year old wanted to read again and again. Instead, after one or two readings, it sat on the table, unopened, until it was returned to the library. This is not one that I, personally, would buy.
