About the Author
In the 19th century, Jakob (1785 - 1863) and Wilhelm (1786 - 1859) Grimm collected folktales as part of a larger study of German culture. Their belief that folktales were reflections of the popular mind resulted in many works together including Grimm's Fairy Tales.
Charles Santore's illustrations are part of the permanent collections of the Brandywine River Museum, The Free Library of Philadelphia, and The Museum of Modern Art.
Customer Reviews
The original is so much better than Disney
I bought this book specifically to show my daughter that there is a world beyond the Wonderful World of Disney. While Walt used the story of Snow White to make an interesting and entertaining movie, the original story is so much better. We already own Charles Santore's version of The Wizard of Oz, so I was excited to find his (absolutely) beautiful illustrations incorporated into this original telling of Snow White. While the story could be scary to young children - Snow White is a child after all - the wording has been neutered enough to downplay the fact that a deranged woman is trying to kill a 7 year old child. My daughter, who is old enough to understand that a story is just a story, was absolutely fascinated with all the ways that the Disney version deviated from the original Brothers Grimm version. Santore's illustrations drove the point home for her. She just looks at them - mesmerized. Snow White and the Wizard of Oz (also illustrated by Charles Santore) are "must haves" for any library collection.
Gorgeously illustrated
This book has marvelous illustrations of the fairy tale story as originally told by the Grimm brothers. This book can be great for young children as the pictures are so vivid and life-like, especially of Snow White who is portrayed as a child rather than a teenager. Each picture is a springboard for conversation with little ones. I will be looking for all of Charles Santore's books after seeing this one.
Beautiful Interpretation of a Classic
Beautifully rendered drawings adorn the pages of this favorite classic. Santore's paintings always delight. If you love your children's books to include gorgeous illustrations, then look no further: this is a winner in that department.
