From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. Grinning broadly as he looms monumentally over everyone in Walz's exuberant cartoons, Babe Ruth cuts a truly heroic figure for Murphy's easy-to-read tribute to the greatest ball player of them all. The author also adds some dimension to the Babe's oft-told tale, suggesting that Ruth's true greatness rests not so much in his statistical totals as in the way that his character and exciting style of play redeemed baseball in the wake of the Black Sox scandal of 1919. It's a cogently made argument--and the lighthearted tone in which Murphy delivers it may make this more appealing than the overheated melodrama of Robert Burleigh's Home Run (1998). A solid hit for the Step into Reading series. John Peters

Author Commentary
All of my books are written with an intention to "breathe life into history". I want kids to read about historical figures and learn about these icons' personalities. Finding obscure facts that are interesting, striking and funny make these books nutritious (for the mind!). I wrote this book because I wanted to show some new sides to Babe Ruth. Babe really did save baseball - from inspiring kids to changing the game of baseball with his titanic home runs. Enjoy the book. For further Ruth reading check out Robert Burleigh's powerful picture book Home Run! Another new title is Lynn Curlee's picture book about baseball parks... Whack!
FANTASTIC BOOK!!!
I love this book! I love how the author makes Babe come alive for kids. I am a teacher and have read this book to my class. All of my students loved hearing it and have read it again and again. We really felt like we got to know Babe and looked up to him so much more than we already did!!! Frank Murphy does an excellent job telling the sad story of baseball and how it did almost die, but he leaves the reader feeling very positive and inspired to be their own kind of hero!!!
