Grade 5–8—The magical and somewhat batty Strega-Borgia family returns in the sixth volume in Gliori's popular series. Everyone awaits the birth of the new baby—especially evil, revenge-seeking Uncle Don Lucifer, who has made a deal with S'tan to have the newborn stolen and substituted with a leering infant demon with pointed teeth. The demon Isagoth, assigned to steal the baby, finds him to be more than a handful. Meanwhile, Mum doesn't seem to notice that her newest child is a changeling, and the other family members are doing their best not to upset her with the news. Oh—and Hell has literally frozen over, too. This witty, if overwritten, novel seems to be aimed more at adults than at children, and readers experience the story nearly as often from the adults' points of view as from those of the Strega-Borgia children. It's likely that only readers familiar with the previous titles will be able to follow most of the convoluted goings-on, but the series' many fans will no doubt be waiting for it.—Walter Minkel, New York Public Library

A five star book!
I love the "Pure Dead" series! I'm reading them to my son; he can't wait for more - and I'm enjoying them as much as he is!

Imagine the Addams family in Scotland; that comes close to describing the Strega-Borgias, though the characters are nothing if not unique and original. There are strong, well developed characters of both genders, a marvelous assortment of highly unusual talking pets (including dragons), a castle with a moat, good witches, evil demons, a cryogenically frozen great great etc. grandmother who awakens from time to time, a villainous and homicidal half-brother, and thoroughly bizarre situations, all presented with great humor and warmth.

I highly recommend the "Pure Dead" books to anyone with an offbeat imagination, child or adult.

Entertaining for ALL ages
As an adult working in a grammar school, I find myself reading a great deal of juvenile fiction. I am finding this series to be one of the most enjoyable I've come across. It's quirky!! The characters are unique and the interactions between them keep the interest and excitement going. I hope the series continues!!!
