Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 In another of Klein's frank but fun YA novels, eighth-grader Evan and his buddy Karim, prompted by a class discussion on equal rights, volunteer to become cheerleaders for the girls' softball team. After initial ridicule by male classmates, as well as second thoughts by the usually confident Evan, the boys are rewarded for their innovative thinking when they turn out to be instant celebrities (especially with the girls!). The most entertaining of the subplots deals with romeo Evan's confusion as he attempts to deal with the dual affections of his longtime girlfriend and a recently "blossomed" but obnoxious old classmate. Klein's characters are true to life and dialgue is realistic as she draws an honest and humorous portrayal of some of the fears and insecurities of young teens. The integration of the various subplots is done smoothly and skillfully. Unfortunately, in Klein's attempt to be current, she dates this book by including a concert scene with the now defunct musical group, the Go-Go's. Still, it's an entertaining and amusing story with an attractive cover that will add to its appeal. Deb Andrews, Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, Ind.
