A technical survey of bridge advancements and construction5
This reprints a 1929 classic in an unabridged presentation covering the design and construction of spans around the world, from wooden landmarks and classic restored medieval structures to covered bridges, stone structures, and modern (up to early 1900s, that is) creations. Chapters pack in many vintage black and white photos and diagrams to accompany a technical survey of bridge advancements and construction.

I'm developing a collection of bridge books, and have several to compare to. This one, "Bridges of the World", leaves me disappointed.

1. The writing style is, for my preferences, too elementary. The writer seems to approach much of his work as "fashion statement".

2. I was aware of the copyright date (1929) when I got it, and I enjoy historical books. However, this doesn't read so much "historical" as simply a poorly written 80 year old book.

3. I love good old quality black and white photos. This book has plenty of photos, but goes for quantity over quality. Many of them are poor quality, and reproduced at a small size as well.

4. The best thing about this book was, ironically, its cover picture. I am especially interested in the Pont du Gard, and seeing it on the cover probably influenced me to get this. Once you get past beyond the beautiful pictures of the Manhattan Bridge and Pont du Gard on the cover, it's a letdown... at least it was for me.
