Product Description

Favorite recipes and anecdotes from the co-author of the Mrs. Murphy Mysteries.

Sneaky Pie Brown, co-author of such irresistible Mrs. Murphy mysteries as Murder on the Prowl, dishes up delectable fare for cats and humans alike in this unique collection of recipes spiced with witty personal anecdotes, including glimpses of life with co-author Rita Mae Brown.

What do you serve when a kitty is bored with all the old standbys? Since cookbooks are written by humans for humans, Sneaky Pie Brown has produced a cookbook with appeal for fastidious felines, including such treats as Veal Kidney and Salmon Pie.

Ever the thoughtful hostess, Miss Pie has also included plenty of recipes to accommodate the visiting human or finicky dog. There's Mother's Fried Chicken, Christmas Goose, Big Dog's Delight, and, of course, Mrs. Hogendobber's Orange Buns, the very thought of which makes Mrs. Murphy fans' mouths water.

Throughout there are also delightfully illustrated anecdotes for those Sneaky Pie fans eager to learn more about the dashing author. She even spills the beans about what happened to Rita Mae's brand-new pickup when a neighbor came calling with his goat.

For cats and cat lovers, this book combines real and tasty recipes with the same droll humor that made one reviewer declare, "As feline collaborators go, you couldn't ask for better than Sneaky Pie Brown, the canny tiger cat" (The New York Times Book Review).

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
It is also a mystery whether this should be considered a proper cookbook. Feline Sneaky Pie, owned by human author Rita Mae Brown, narrates the 25 recipes that are divided fairly evenly between menus for humans and those for edibles for four-legged creatures (those animals include rabbits, horses, and dogs, as well as cats). Some dishes are serious and straightforward, such as Mom's fried chicken. Other recipes mirror Sneaky's humor; note the instructions for the dog's dinner: "Take the leftovers from these recipes, toss all of them in a dish, and feed. [Hee hee]." The fun is not so much in the cooking as in the accompanying prose; after all, it's not every day that we learn one of Rita Mae's most cherished beliefs--"cocktail parties are an excellent way to weaken men." For the Sneaky Pies in all of us. Barbara Jacobs

Customer Reviews

what a wonderful cookbook for humans and animals!5
I am a big fan of Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie, and this book does not dissapoint. The recipes are wonderful for both cats, dogs, and humans, and the filler stories are wonderful. You really get a feline for both Sneaky Pie, Pewter, and the rest of Ms. Brown's menagerie. I have tried the recipes on my cat, and she loved them. This is truely a great book for anyone who loves dogs, cats, or wants something nice for a present for an animal lover.

A Very Good Cookbook4
I value all opinions of fellow reviewers, but I disagree with the reader from Alaska who previously turned in a review. As a lover of both mysteries and cookbooks, I have enjoyed many of the Mrs. Murphy Mysteries and I have also enjoyed the cookbook. Yes, it does seem geared to attract some of Sneaky Pie and Rita Mae Brown's devout fans, but the recipes seem real and the human ones sound just delicious. I find this an extremely useful cookbook in that some recipes can be made for both humans and animals. All in all, I think Sneaky Pie Brown's venture into the world of cookbooks is a very successful one and her little volume comes recommended.

My favorite Easter present5
I received this book as an Easter present from my 3 little cherubs, Errol, Lucy and Troi. Errol and Lucy are cats who were rescued from the same animal shelter when they were babies. Troi was a gift from my father. She's a Shetland Sheepdog. They, and I, feel that this is a wonderful cookbook and story. I've tried many of the recipes and have found each one of them to be delicious and easy to prepare. I've prepared some of the recipes and shared them at family functions. My family and friends love the recipes. It's nice to find a cookbook that includes recipes appropriate for my 3 little ones. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and loves to cook.
