Jeff Webb is an internationally recognized SharePoint consultant and trainer, living in Florida, who has written about computers and technology for 20 years. Among his published O'Reilly titles are "Essential Sharepoint", "Sharepoint Office Pocket Guide", "Programming Excel with VBA and .NET", and "Excel 2003 Programming: A Developer's Notebook". Jeff has also written programming guides, articles, and sample applications for Microsoft and Digital Equipment Corporation. He was an original member of Microsoft's Visual Basic team.

Complete and concise
This book is well-written and covers a good range of SharePoint topics. I find it more readable than "The Definitive Guide" (Pyles et al.), another O'Reilly book on the subject. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of topics covered, but I would definitely recommend reading this one first if you're new to SharePoint.

Effective planning for a Sharepoint MOSS 2007 rollout is best addressed in Essential Sharepoint.
