When the great zemie Yocahu visited the Tainans long ago, he taught them to live in peace and promised to return one day. So when Columbus's caravels appear on the Caribbean, the Tainans believe that Yocahu has returned. But the Europeans are set on conquest. Every time they forced a village to accept Christianity at sword-point, they lost touch with their own god. It's not until the crippled son of a Taino chief befriends a cabin boy on Columbus's ship that the cultures merge. Among forcible pacification and genocide, the boys seek the Tainan principles of peace and love, as Sons of Yocahu.

Best Read of the Year
I found the story--the narrative--riveting for its own sake. I was also appropriately horrified by the metaphor. This is a "man's inhumanity to man" story based on the worst manifestation of egomania gone mad. Because the tale is a cautionary fable, it informs, once again, that brutality thrives when the golden rule is revoked; trumped by racism.
If it were "only a story," it would still be impossible to put down. But it is more than a story. It is a fictionalized version of a tragically true story. As in all gripping sagas, there is goodness, nobility, and triumphant kindness. But don't expect Bond to be gentle with her reader. I am still haunted by the wanton atrocities of the invaders. Yet, this is why we read. Information and inspiration are the opposites of ignorance and prejudice. This was one of the most memorable books I read last year
Sons of Yocahu
After meeting Gloria Bond she told me of her book and I hurried to buy it. I never imagined how drawn into a story I could become. This is the best read ever! Based on factual events and a story line added you see how some cultures believe themselves better than other cultures and decide to eliminate anything and everyone in there path. As I finished this moving story the tears ran down my cheeks. I say "Thank you" to Gloria for all the research she did and for her extrodinary gift for story telling. I look forward to more books by Gloria Bond.
A Compelling Saga
Sons of Yocahu is a powerful narrative. The historical background has clearly been well-researched, but don't expect this story to read like a textbook! The plot moves quickly, drawing you in. The characters are deep and human to the core; you'll find yourself moved with love, pity, and compassion by their plights.
When you sit down to read this novel, you'll find yourself unable to put it down. Be forewarned that you should probably have a box of tissues nearby!
