From Booklist
Gr. 4^-6. Entertaining, informative, and surprisingly readable, the lists gathered in this hefty paperback vary so widely in content that the temptation to list some of them is irresistible. In the toy category, lists include 20 kinds of marbles, the prices of 10 toys in the 1897 Sears Roebuck catalog, and the eight colors Crayola retired as well as the eight that replaced them. Longer lists include a detailed chronology of Mr. Potato Head (born in 1952, meets and marries Mrs. Potato Head in Boise in 1953, plastic bodies in 1964, quit pipe smoking in 1987); eight tips on which carnival games are impossible or nearly impossible to win and why; and six tricky techniques used in toy commercials. Other lists concern growing up, self-improvement, education, friends, family, food, books, online services, electronic games, and entertainment. Humorous line drawings dot the pages. Anyone who knows middle grade kids knows that this book is right on target, from the idea of lists to the upbeat tone of the writing. Carolyn Phelan
