not his best, but good horror
the always good campbell black[also known as thomas altman and campbell armstrong],here wrote a solid, scary novel, but the haunted summer/beach house and ouija board seems a little tired today,in 2000[maybe not in the early eighties when this was first published],but blacks style of prose is riveting, and its difficult to put down this or any of his works.......really the only reason this gets 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the predictability of the ending, which will not surprise most horror readers.......still,its way ahead of most horror novels.....too bad blacks not writing in this field anymore.....great book!
Wake me when it's over!
The premise was sooo interesting: In the early 1900's, a man and a girl commit suicide under very mysterious circumstances at a remote beach house. In the present day, which happens to be the 80's, two women and their teenaged children rent the house and weird things start to happen.
This should have really held my interest, but it didn't. The characters were agonizingly dull, their reactions frustrating, there was no sense of pacing or heigtened suspense. It took me about a month to get through it, I kept putting it down to read other things...like cereal boxes, War & Peace, etc.
One of the best horror novels ever
This novel is amazing. I loved it and rank it in my opinion as one of the greatest horror novels of all time. if you like supernatural fiction buy this book. you woun't be disapointed.
