Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4AThe star of I Am Angela (Greenwillow, 1997) and the members of her Top-Secret Computer Club return for another adventure. On the last day before summer vacation, the administrators and teachers at the Central School discover that the computer-generated report cards have been doctored so that they are all ridiculously inaccurate. Angela and her friends try to figure out what caused the problem. A mysterious e-mail message sent to Albert leads them to some clues. They suspect Margaret, who is skilled with computers, but don't know who might have helped her. With the help of the school administrators, Angela and her friends set a successful trap for her and the other suspects. This amusing, well-crafted book is perfect for readers moving past beginning chapter books. Angela is a strong, appealing character who follows through with things until she accomplishes her goals. The story is accompanied by enjoyable two-color pen-and-ink drawings.AAnne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA

From Booklist
Gr. 2^-4. In this sequel to I Am Angela (1997), someone has broken into the school's computer system, resulting in scrambled report cards and missing data. Angela and her cohorts in the Top-Secret Computer Club, sponsored by librarian Mrs. Grover, are called upon to solve the mystery. Using their knowledge of e-mail, they track down and expose the student hackers just in time to salvage everyone's fall class schedules. Keller's intrepid heroine hits just the right note in this upbeat mystery, which features technology as a natural part of kids' lives, rather than as a sinister influence. Short chapters and frequent line drawings with halftone overlays add to the appeal for first-chapter-book readers. Kay Weisman

Review
This is a breezy and entertaining mystery for younger readers, and the idea that school might be an entertaining place to be in summer is a refreshing one (we're clearly entering the era of guilt-free geekdom). Keller's excellent with her technical details, keeping them simple and clear but also accurate and generally plausible, so that the story should appeal to technophiles without scaring off technophobes. Compukids will find it all hard to resist. -- "Bulleting of the Center for Children's Books, " 2/3/98
