Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-A history of golf that includes memorable moments and outstanding players. The first section gives interesting background but includes terminology that is not defined. Carefully crafted chapters on 18 superstars give insights into their personalities, their accomplishments, and their contributions to both the game and other players. Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods, Babe Zaharias, and Nancy Lopez are among those included. The second part of the book describes courses, their architecture, caddies, swings, clubs, putting, and the popularity of the game. While readers wanting to know more about this sport will find the book valuable, the text does assume some background knowledge.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-8. New York Times sportswriter Anderson continues his series of introductory essays on various sports with this overview of golf. The text follows the usual chronological approach, but Anderson wisely structures his account around individuals, thus making it possible to trace golf history while telling the stories of the game's most revered masters. As Anderson tells it, each era in the sport's evolution is epitomized by three dominant players, beginning with the age of Hagen, Sarazen, and Jones and ending with Woods, Faldo, and Norman. In addition to the historical survey, Anderson covers such related topics as golf architecture, caddies, and the lure of the game. Readers who know nothing of golf will be a bit puzzled by the text, which, while elementary, assumes some knowledge of the sport. Young golfers forced to write book reports and looking for a good way to ease the pain are probably the ideal audience for this competent, no-frills introduction. Bill Ott
