From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6?When Sylvia receives a free packet of "Magic Meadow Wildflower Medley" seeds in the mail, her summer suddenly gets more exciting. Her mysterious neighbor, Mr. MacCooney, seems to be using magic to keep his garden lush during the worst drought the town has ever experienced, and he begins to make her aware, through dreams and visions, of the fairy world. Sylvia learns that the school bully, Dana, has been communicating with the fairies for some time, and they become reluctant allies in an attempt to discover why the Gnome King has caused the drought and how to appease his anger. Although the premise is promising, this story is ultimately unsatisfying. Readers learn a bit of faery lore but are never given the opportunity to delve into it and learn about the nature of the interaction between humans and the wee folk. The tension between good and evil isn't explored and therefore even a creature of darkness like the ratlike Fir Darrig lacks real menace. Finally, most of the characters are flat, even such potentially intriguing ones as Mr. MacCooney, and some are downright superfluous. Eloise McGraw's Moorchild (McElderry, 1996) is a bit more challenging, but far more rewarding fare.?Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
