Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Headed by Chester the cat and Harold the dog, the Bunnicula gang returns in fine form in one of Howe's characteristically antic adventures. This time, Toby's birthday has arrived and the household pets are relegated to the cellar, to keep them away from a mysterious "special" present that consists of seven suitcases with a creature inside each. Demonstrating his powers of deduction (as celebrated as they are convoluted), Chester determines that Toby's parents have procured seven new pets and that Chester and company have, alas, become obsolete. While Bunnicula maintains his usual silence, Chester inveigles Harold and Howie the dachshund puppy into a hare-brained plot to convince Toby's family that they are pets without peer--and they succeed, although perhaps not as Chester intended. Throughout, Howe's lighthearted narrative balances humor with suspense, while the unusual clarity of Morrill's illustrations neatly contains the animals' chaotic capers. One can only wish for many happy returns. Ages 5-up .

"An entertaining, reassuring tale." -- Booklist
About the Author
James Howe is the author of more than seventy books for young readers, including the popular and award-winning series about Bunnicula and his friends. Among his other books are the Pinky and Rex series, The Misfits, Totally Joe, and the Sebastian Barth mysteries. James did not enjoy camping when he was a boy, but he did always wish he had a pet skunk. He still does wish this at times, but for the most part he's happy with the dog and two cats who share his home in New York State.
James Howe says:
"Back in the Olden Days, before there were such things as cable television or DVDs, I loved staying up late at night to watch old horror movies on TV. My favorites were the ones about hollow-eyed vampires and torch-bearing peasants, or those with mad scientists whose accents fell somewhere between Upper Mongolia and the Bronx. Nighty-Nightmare came out of the affection I still feel for those movies and the laughs -- along with the chills -- they gave me. Chester's story of how Bunnicula traveled from Transylvania to America is a spoof of just about every old horror movie I ever saw!"
Jeff Mack has illustrated six books in the Bunnicula and Friends series. He is also the illustrator of several popular picture books, such asRub-a-Dub Sub, We're Rabbits!, and Starry Safari. Jeff lives in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Visit him on the Web at www.JeffMack.com.

I bought these chapter books for my grandaughters. They simply love them. I hit a homerun with these.
Surprise
It's Toby's birthday, and there's a cake on the table, a party in the living room and seven suitcases in Mr. Monroe's study. Suitcases with eyes. Suitcases that move. Are these mysterious suitcases presents for Toby? Or are they something else?
Harold the dog, Chester the cat, and Howie the dachshund puppy set out to investigate. But before they're through, they've turned Toby's party into a creepy- crawly birthday surprise - for everyone.
This bouncy birthday book features Bunnicula, the world-famous vmpire rabbit, and his three buddies in their latest picture book adventure.
Howe's the Best!
James Howe did it again. I'm a teacher and my students love all of the James Howe "Bunnicula" books! Perfect to read aloud. The children were happy to see their favorite characters involved in another adventure.
