Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
The team that did Are You Quite Polite? (2006) once again has rude fun while nearly stepping over the line. In rhyming verse and wild, watercolor and colored-pencil cartoonlike scenarios, Michael has a lot to tell about his school day. Every time he gets to the best parts of his stories, though, his mom warns him not to say "that word." He picks his nose as he tells about Rebecca, who brought birthday cookies to school and the boy who topped his cookie with a . . . Then there was the teacher at recess who threatened to punish the group and then stepped into a pile of . . . In the story's climax, it is Max's turn to yell at Mom, "Don't say that word!" From the cover with the kid suffering a time out with a big bar of soap in his mouth, the gross humor is right-on for slapstick in relaxed families that will enjoy the farce and the mischievous wordplay. Customer Reviews

This book is great5
My daughter is 5 and we first got this book as a library book. She has the cutest giggle when she figures out what the next funny word is going to be. We have read this book 3 straight nights in a row. Thumbs up!

Great for early elementary5
I read this to K and 1st graders and it was a hit, even with the teachers. The kids loved the gross factor. Rhyming text also makes it fun to guess what icky word is coming next. They would've listened to me read it 5x I think!

Not Everything I Was Hoping For3
I love Alan Katz's silly song books. I use them all the time with the fifth graders that I work with, as does the music teacher. This isn't a silly song book.

I read this book to my students. They were mildly entertained. One of them commented that the pictures look like those in the silly song books. It was basically read and forgotten. The students didn't have a desire to talk about and I wasn't asked to read it again.

It's a bit of double edge sword. If I had never read the silly song books, I probably would have enjoyed this verse more. After reading Mr. Katz's hilarious alternative lyric poems, this just didn't measure up to me. Mr. Katz, you have done too well with what you have done previously.
