Because I can't give it zero stars
My three-year-old daughter received this book as a gift at a local story time. If I could have avoided reading it to her, I would have, but she couldn't wait to read to read her "present." Essentially, Eloise is rude and disobedient to the adults around her, and she totally ignores the museum's rules, like "Don't climb on the exhibits." That all could be forgiven, in my opinion, if Eloise did not take such glee in doing them and if she ever received any sort of consequences from the adults in the story (her tutor and her nanny). Even Curious George, who we do like to read, has to deal with some consequences, and he's a monkey! Instead, Eloise's tutor is a very weak character who, after being mimicked by Eloise for about ten pages, finally appeals to the nanny to "make her stop." The nanny, who generally ignores the bad behavior, simply removes Eloise from a triceratops by saying, "It's time for lunch."
Yes, every child knows instinctively that Eloise is naughty. After we read the book, my daughter and I discussed the wrong things Eloise was doing. But now I have new and exciting bad behaviors to correct, such as a child who tells me that I'm "boring, boring, boring" when she doesn't get what she wants and mimics others. She'll come up with enough bratty behavior herself as she gets older, we don't need to invite it into our house. If you're looking to expose your kids to undesirable behaviors, then the Eloise books are for you. But if you are trying to raise reasonably polite, kind, and respectful children, Eloise is not in your corner.
A favorite in our house
We love Eloise in our house. This is such a cute book. It's my daughter's(she's 2 1/2) favorite Eloise book. We've read it so much it's almost falling apart.
