A lost treasure of Beaumarchais
Beaumarchais' wit is not lost in "A Mother's Guilt." Instead of reflecting the ideas of the Enlightenment that lead to the French Revolution like his "Barber of Seville" and "Marriage of Figaro" it reflects the impact of the French Revolution itself.
Beaumarchais intended for this play to be performed along with the other two, and I think its omission is a tragedy. Studying all three works together gives great incite into the trend of French thought both from before, during, and after the revolution.
Any serious comdedic reader or French historian should not fail to read this lost treasure of Beaumarchais.
