From Booklist
PI Kate Kinsella is deeply depressed over the recent murder of her boyfriend. Her longtime friend Hubert decides she needs a change of scene and books Kate into a rural retreat. When she arrives, she finds the "retreat" more like a prison--no telephones, recent magazines, or newspapers; no contact with the outside world; and a group of decidedly oddball guests. One of the guests is Fran Rowley, a former high-flying lawyer who has just been released after serving six years in prison for killing her infant son. Her husband, sister, and surviving daughter have abandoned her, but Kate finds herself feeling sorry for Fran. The more she talks to her, the more Kate believes she's innocent. But if Fran didn't murder her son, who did? Kate's PI instincts kick in, and almost without realizing it, she's investigating Fran's case. This low-key, low profile female PI series deserves wider recognition: the plots are original, there's always a bit of gentle humor, and Kate is definitely charismatic. A good pick for all collections. Emily Melton
