Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-A concise, objective biography that opens dramatically with O'Connor taking her place as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. The book describes her childhood on a ranch, education, marriage, family life, legal career, and work as a Supreme Court justice. The text is clear, lively, and filled with anecdotes and quotations, though there are no citations. McElroy also explains what trial and appeals court judges do, the purpose of the Supreme Court, and the nomination process. Numerous black-and-white and color photos and sidebars are included. The author's Meet My Grandmother: She's a Supreme Court Justice (Millbrook, 1999) is written from the viewpoint of Courtney O'Connor; Jean Kinney Williams's Sandra Day O'Connor (Ferguson, 2001) goes into slightly more detail, and has material on becoming a lawyer or judge and a further reading section. This engaging title is a good resource for reports.
