Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3?A perky tribute to the furry little creatures with shoe-button eyes. Pleasantly informative tidbits on their history, care, and feeding may well encourage readers to try a guinea pig as a pet. Those who decide to acquire one will want a more in-depth treatment such as Mark Evans's Guinea Pigs (Dorling Kindersley, 1992), but King-Smith's title makes the perfect introduction to the lovable animals. Jeram's line-and-watercolor illustrations transform fuzzy lumps into curious, cuddly, thoroughly engaging creatures. This title is a cheerful, chatty read-aloud that can stand on its own or be linked with units on pets, mammals, rodents, or other series' entries. It's an absolute must for libraries and homes with resident rodents.?Jody McCoy, Casady School, Oklahoma City

From Booklist
Ages 4^-8. Recalling the hundreds of guinea pigs he's kept as pets over the years, King-Smith writes of the history, physical features, behavior, and personalities of the creatures. Best known for humorous novels based on the adventures of animals, King-Smith knows how to hold a nonfiction audience. Whether discussing the way to make a guinea pig fond of you or the pleasure he takes from looking at the apple tree where his favorites, Beach Boy and King Arthur, lie buried, King-Smith knows how to talk without condescension about things that matter to children. Jeram's deft line drawings, brightened with watercolor washes, complement the simple, conversational tone of the text. Carolyn Phelan

Review
"Full of facts and surprises... a distinguished array of artists and authors, and a (narrative) approach more serendipitous than eneyclopaedic. Each book has an entirely original slant on its subject." The Guardian; "The best information books are so interesting that they make you want to find out more. The Read and Wonder books do just that." Margaret Meek, Emeritus Reader, Institute of Education, University of London"

An excellent introduction to the care of guinea pigs!5
I bought this book for my daughter just before we got her first pets, two guinea pigs! The pictures are lovely and the book covers guinea pig likes and dislikes, as well as their basic needs from vitamin c to clean water. The best part though is the author's continued assertation that guinea pigs love to be cuddled!

The most wonderful book on Guinea Pigs I've ever encountered5
I do research on every animal I own and this was one of the most informative books I have ever found. The animation is extrordinary and it has made my daughter aware that books can help us all in raising our animals properly. I don't know how many times we have referred to it for one question or another about our guinea pigs. We also love to just go back and look at the pictures because they make us smile. A wonderful childrens book, and if I do say so myself, it is great for adults too. I am so very glad we found this book and bought it. I would highly recommend it to anyone getting or already having a guinea pig. Jackie and Kathy Fisher

Exquisite!!!5
I think adults can enjoy the book as well. Smith is charming, witty and very knowledgeable about the species.
