About the Author
Gary Shelly Gary Shelly, together with co-author Tom Cashman, wrote and published his first computer education textbook in 1969. Since then, more than twenty million copies of Shelly Cashman textbooks have been sold. In recent years, Gary, Tom, and a talented group of contributing authors have produced leading textbooks on computer programming, computer concepts, and application software. Thomas J. Cashman Thomas J. Cashman received his education at California State University, Los Angeles. In 1960, he established one of the first business data processing programs in the United States at Long Beach City College in California, where he taught and served as department head from 1960 to 1966. In 1969, he began collaborating with Gary Shelly. Since that time, Cashman, Shelly, and a talented group of contributing authors have produced more than 186 leading textbooks on computer programming, computer concepts, and application software. He has also taught summer institutes for teachers at the University of Central Oklahoma, Memphis State University, and Purdue University. The Shelly Cashman Series Thirty-five years ago, computer educator Tom Cashman collaborated with Gary Shelly, one of his programming students, on their first book: IBM System/360 Assembler Language, published by Anaheim Publishing Company. Excellent Text for Beginning Computer Students
I have used this text for 2 semesters for my Introduction to Computer classes at Grand Valley State University and find it a very excellent text and instructional guide for instructor as well as for the students. The information is current and very relevant to what our students need to know. I highly recommend this text.

A Solid Foundation in Computer Concepts
i received a b.s. in mgt/mis in the 80s and recently took a self-paced community college course that used this as a textbook as part of a 2nd degree program i am pursuing. i wanted to refresh/update my knowledge in the field.

this is a comprehensive overview of computers presented in a clear way with wonderful study aids. i particularly enjoyed the programming, enterprise systems, and networking chapters. it also covers career fields within IT. what really makes this book outstanding is the website that comes with it. at the end of each chapter are tests and tutorials which you can do online. the labs are excellent and i loved the one on chapter 4 which explained the guts of the computer and then had you build one! it had you draw a network diagram and assign ip addresses. these types of tutorials really help "lock in" the subject matter. students today have the best tools to learn. i wish i had this 20 years ago!!

i recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about/brushing up on computer skills. for folks out of school, this is a great way to get the lingo.

Good Primer
This book is a good primer or intro, as it is marketed. My only problem with it is that it is heavy on large pictures, and limited on true text.
