Even as an adult, I still use the lesson taught in this book5
As a little girl, I remember finding this among my older brother's books, and reading it over and over again. Sometimes, my mom would read it with me, and talk with me about it. Even though the book made me sad when I read it, I was nevertheless drawn to it.

The book comforted me, helped me realize that it was okay to be hurt, and taught me to empathize with the pain of others'. I am all grown up, but every now and then when I am down, I think back to this book and the lesson it taught. Very few books in my entire life have impacted me this much! I will definitely buy it for my own children. This is truly a beautiful and endearing little book!

The Hurt5
I was given this book as an adult healing from an abusive childhood. I have since used it in play therapy with children at risk of emotional disturbance. I now have a family childcare and am adopting three older children and have been searching for my copy of this book because it is so invaluable. Kids don't realize that something that happened "a while ago" can effect them in such a large way. This book explains it very well and shows kids that talking out a problem can often soften the hurt and make it manageable. Great book. I'm glad to have found it. I'm buying an extra copy for a special education teacher also because she says it sounds like something her students could benefit from.

The Hurt is a beautifully written book for children and adults. It can be used in a therapeutic setting or for everyday reading. The book deals with the anxiety, loneliness, and upset that can result from the internalization of feelings. The character learns to ease this anxiety/pain by verbalizing his internal distress and seeking out the comfort of his father. Teddi Doleski magically captures the "hurt" that results from conflict/teasing/internalization of unhappiness and the tendency for this "hurt" to grow without assistance. The book then provides the character with ways to cope with these feelings and externalize his emotions, which results in decreased "hurt." I buy the book in bulk and provide all of my clients and friends with a copy.
