Jose Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros came to the United States in the 1930s (during the "Mexican craze"), bringing their muralist visions to a variety of projects. This carefully researched book devotes much of its space to the most important work of each of "Los Tres Grandes." Thus, Orozco's murals at Dartmouth, Siqueiros's Experimental Workshop in New York, and Rivera's images of the auto industry at the Detroit Institute of Art get detailed coverage. The political landscape in the work of these left-of-center artists, which cannot be ignored, is best represented in Hurlburt's examination of Rivera's never-completed mural, with its heroic Lenin, at Rockefeller Center. Limited to few color photographs of the three muralists' work, and relying instead on many black-and-white images from the 1930s, this book supplies an excellent visual record of its topic. Recommended for academic, public, and museum libraries.
