Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Exotic hand-decorated fabrics such as Indonesian batiks and Indian block prints have become popular with patchwork enthusiasts and others who want an international flair in their decorating. But because they are not found in the commercial fabric trade, one must seek them out. Some, such as indigo-dyed Nigerian adire, are found only in the local outdoor markets. Shepard (African Accents) has selected nine of her favorites and presents well-detailed projects for making the fabrics themselves from plain cloth as well as making pillows and other household items from the finished product. She offers tips for travelers and North American sources for fabrics and supplies. Her excellent book is for public libraries and academic textile arts collections.

"Global Expressions" Great Ideas for Decorating!5
Ms. Shepard's "Global Expressions, Decorating With Fabrics From Around the World" is a terrific selection for anyone interested in bringing the beauty of fabrics from around the world into their home. Similar to Ms. Shepard's "African Accents", the decorating and crafts projects are described clearly with easy-to-follow instructions. The beautiful photographs are a pleasure to look through and provide creative inspiration to show how anyone could use the stylish, yet practical decorating ideas in this book to accent their own personal style.

This book is a definite must-have item for anyone with decorative fabric sitting on a shelf just waiting to be used. One of my favorite projects, the Japanese Print Accent Fan, was the perfect centerpiece for my table at Thanksgiving. My next project will be an Indonesian Batik Pillow. "Global Expressions" provides excellent guidance to anyone wishing to create a "Global Eclectic" décor for their home, while also being informative on the cultural and historical significance of the crafts and artistry of diverse cultures throughout the world. I continue to enjoy it, and highly recommend it!
