Antonio Lopez Garcia is one of Spain's most revered contemporary artists. Bringing his profound visual sensitivity and mastery of light to bear on a range of deliberately quotidian subjects, Lopez Garcia imbues them with an extraordinary and haunting character. In 1993, his paintings and drawings were given a major retrospective at the Reina Sofia, Madrid, while Victor Erice's 1992 documentary about Lopez Garcia, The Quince Tree of the Sun, received the Critics' Prize at that year's Cannes and top prize at the Chicago Film Festival. Yet Lopez Garcia's work has rarely been exhibited outside his native country. This book, published to accompany the first major exhibition of his art in the United States (in tandem with the MFA's monumental El Greco to Velazquez exhibition), offers the first comprehensive overview in English of this extraordinary oeuvre. An essay by curator Cheryl Brutvan discusses Lopez Garcia as a descendant of the great Spanish naturalists, as well as his indebtedness to Surrealism and "magic realism," while individual appreciations of some 50 paintings offer English-speaking readers their first opportunity to appreciate in depth the remarkable poetry and atmospheric density of this major world artist.

Customer Reviews
Amazing artist, great book
Yes this book is smaller than the $1,500. Rizzoli book, but it has great reproductions and newer work that isn't in the other book. This is a MUST have for any Lopez Garcia fan.
Pre-review.
Why so inexpensive when the Rizolli book is $400+? Size. This is a small book at 6 3/4 by 8 1/4. I appreciate anything I can get on the artist, but the person who put this book together should have considered the stature of this artist. In my opinion and I am far from alone, he is one of our very best painters/sculptors living today.
A nice review of a first rate realist painter
This is a catalog of the retrospective works of a little known but highly respected Spanish realist who has had very few shows here in the US. It gives a reasonable sampleof his progression from the paintings of the 1950's wherein his early involvement with a proto surrealism quickly evolved into an intense, almost clinical realism and an incredibleUnderground Together: The Art and Life of Harvey Dinnerstein recording of his immediate domestic world and of the city of Madrid The reproductions are vivid and sensitive to the subtleties of Lopez Garcia's palette. though to quibble, are not nearly inclusive enough of the work in the Boston Museums show. Indeed there are some needless duplications. But on balance a very nice little volume , well written for a change in art books, andThe Art Of Velasquez. The Intimate Eye: The Drawings of Burton Silverman a solid introduction to his work at a fair price
