Product Description

Clematis have long enjoyed popularity in gardens large enough to accommodate them. Now, with the arrival of a new generation of cultivars that excel in mixed borders, containers, and other small spaces, there is more reason than ever to grow them. As well as being modest in height, many of these new clematis are extremely floriferous and self-supporting in a wide range of garden situations and they are joined here by a selection of classic species and cultivars that perform well.

The clematis featured in this book are hand-picked for their longer flowering periods, large flowers and resistance to diseases. Internationally renowned clematis breeder Raymond Evison recommends the best clematis for particular situations, such as containers, mixed borders, patios, deck gardens, hanging baskets, and balconies. Clematis associate well with a variety of other plants and the author lists suitable companion plants and explains how to achieve a compatible mix of color, shape, and other characteristics.

This unprecedented book celebrates a new generation of clematis and will appeak to both established enthusiasts and beginners.

Review
"Evison selects varieties [of clematis] based on their flowering season and finds a host plant or a support that would benefit from free-flowering clematis. After ogling the color pictures of hundreds of varieties in this book, it's hard to think of one that won't." Adrian Higgins, Washington Post (The Washington Post )

From the Inside Flap
Clematis have long enjoyed popularity among gardeners and now, with the arrival of a new generation of cultivars that excel in small garden situations, there is more reason than ever to grow them. As well as being modest in height, many of the new and classic clematis are self-supporting and extremely floriferous, making them ideal for mixed border and container cultivation.

In recent years international nurseryman Raymond J. Evison has championed these compact and highly rewarding cultivars. Recognizing that minimal spaces require clematis of maximum impact, he highlights a selection of high-performance, disease-resistant clematis that flower freely over a long period. He recommends the best clematis for particular situations such as containers, mixed borders, patios, deck gardens, hanging baskets and balconies, and goes on to provide detailed plant descriptions organized by flowering season. Clematis naturally associate well with a variety of other plants and the author discusses suitable companion plants, explaining how to achieve a compatible mix of colour, shape, and form.

This comprehensive reference contains easy-to-follow advice on caring for container-grown plants, pruning the different types of clematis the simple way, providing crucial shade to root systems, propagation techniques, combatting pests and diseases, and much more. Beautifully illustrated with 150 colour photos, this long-awaited book will appeal to everyone from seasoned experts to gardeners discovering clematis for the very first time.

Fabulous, useful info and great pics!5
This book has tons of useful information. No fancy words for confusion's sake, stuff you can use right now.
Beautiful pictures, plants divided per pruning group, planting situation, flowertime and area of climates.
Highly recommended!
The author himself has bred many excellent clematis you should know about.

Helped me be a better clematis gardener5
This book provided information on how to better cultivate the clematis I already have as well as cultivars that might work well in given situations in the future. I had two of Raymond Evison's Patio series in pots on my deck, and both had done very well in terms of flowering this spring but then had died back once the heat came on. I found that this is possibly the result of being in too-small pots, so I have bought some larger, self-watering pots to transplant them into once conditions are right. The book is beatifully produced and the information is very helpful.
