May is so excited to be going on her first family vacation to Florida. Everything is new and exciting: sleeping in a motel, buying postcards, playing miniature golf, and going sightseeing. Things would be perfect if her big brother Ricky wasn’t always turning everything into a contest – and worse, always winning. When May meets Ricky’s challenge to a “double dare,” he gains a new appreciation of his little sister, and the two have a much better vacation.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Vivid memories and vivid colors enliven the story of a young girl on her first long family vacation. Vignette paintings filled with flat colors and staccato patterns evoke the 1950s setting. May, her parents, and her older brother (the one who always wins) set out for a winter vacation in Florida. May is both frightened and excited by the adventure. Khalsa captures this and the delight that a child can take in the smallest details of a new experience. May starts a souvenir collection, coveting motel soap, sugar packs, and postcards. There are also the car games and an undercurrent of sibling rivalry that carry the story along. Khalsa's colors blaze like the southern sun with hot pinks and greens. She packs her pictures with detail. From sightseeing excursions to Parrot Jungle, penny arcades, and miniature golf courses, readers will relish May's experiences and enjoy remembering her family vacation. Memory Lane
Back in my hometown's small one room library, we had this book. It was one of the first books I checked out with my library card and I have loved ever since. The vivid illustrations is what gets me every time. The book was also a different way for me to learn about families. I was amazed that the family was going on a winter vacation to the beach. I've never heard of doing that in my small town life!
Now that I am a teacher, I want to get this book and have it in my library to pass on the colorful illustration and the story that took me on a fun road trip.
