Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-Jam has created a warm and endearing character in the rambunctious Charlotte. She has many questions that need to be answered. How does she know she has a brain if she doesn't feel it working? And how can she have a birthday party if she has insulted all of her friends? Charlotte is eager, independent, scheming, loving, and curious. Jam breathes life into her early on, as readers meet her as she hangs upside down from a bar in the park. Like most seven-year-olds, Charlotte says what is on her mind without giving it much thought, sometimes offending those around her. Yet in the end, she has redeemed herself and is ready to go on to a new adventure. Chan depicts a vivacious little girl with short, curly hair and an impish gleam in her eye. The softly colored pencil-and-watercolor drawings decorate each page beautifully, whether in a full-page spread or in a smaller, more confined area. Charlotte's stories will work best in the hands of those readers who are beyond the beginning-reader format of Pat Ross's "M and M" series (Puffin), but not yet ready for Beverly Cleary's books. A solid purchase for those libraries looking for easy fiction.
