"Real Chicago" is the first photo history of modern Chicago, and the first Chicago book based solely on newspaper photography. -- Tom McNamee, Chicago Sun-Times, October 11, 2004

From the Publisher
Life. Death. Hope and despair. War and peace. The Cubs and Sox. This was daily grist for Chicago Sun-Times photographers as they roamed the city for the past six decades. Once called Chicago's Picture Newspaper, the Sun-Times gained a reputation for documenting Chicago that includes two Pulitzer Prizes for photography. Now, for the first time, this remarkable record of photography has been combed to create an unprecedented artistic look at Chicago. These photos show the Metropolis of the Midwest as it battered its way through World War II, endured population booms and busts and transformed itself. Real Chicago. Some of the photographs will look pleasingly nostalgic. Soem will seem shockingly new. All define Chicago.
From the Author
It took about four seconds to take all of the images in this book. But it took dozens of people working seven days a week for more than 60 years to make them. They are precious. They look anything but precious. They look tough and gritty and real. The photographers who took these images were able to do more than simply record what was happening in front of their cameras. They recorded truths--about human life and about the place and times in which these pictures were taken. This book is about modern Chicago, glimpses of the city since the early 1940s when the Sun and the Times were going head-to-head. This is a collection of newspaper moments. We see the city in crisis and celebration. And we see personal highs and lows. From the wide angle of the years, these pictures combine to show us Real Chicago.
Customer Reviews
Gorgeous indie book
I can't fathom the bonehead above who gave this one star based on the fact that they had a disagreement with a retailer. This book is an extremely high-quality indie book that's full of Sun-Times photos so vivid they almost give texture to the page. I am a fan of Cahan, Williams, and Samors' other books, but this is my favorite of the bunch. The Chicago we live in today still bears some of the echoes of the Chicago in this book, but rarely have I seen the pre-1980's Chicago presented so sharply and with so much character. This is a beautiful coffee-table book and worth a look in particular if you're a fan of black and white photography. Very legit and miles better than other books of its type.
Essential Chicago history.
An essential must have Chicago History. And beautifully printed.
If you can only own three such volumes on /Chicago history,,,,,,,,"Real Chicago"
could be number one, and number two......
Unlike a forest of such histories, "Real Chicago" shows a restraint in publishing
photos, not seen in
other collections, and not a hodge podge easily tossed together.
This book is a magical keyhole, thru which we can observe Chicago's otherwise lost, everyday past.
If you love Chicago, this book is aphrodisiac.
REAL CHICAGO
The seller advertised the book as being Hardcover. When I received the product it was a Softcover. I communicated with the seller by email to complain that he had sent me the wrong product. I contacted the credit card company to place the payment in dispute. The seller doesn't seem to understand that a disputed charge is not a full credit. He has insisted that I return the product at my personal expense on the grounds that I have been reimbursed. I made an offer to accept the Softcover book at a lesser amount. He refused. I would not buy another item from this seller. To him a Softcover book is the same as a Hardcover book. Anyone who buys books knows that a Hardcover book is worth more than a Softcover book.
