A new take on a mystery - fun read!5
I can see this book becoming really popular - it is an excellent read with breaking fast action, great characters and unique plot.
I am an automotive brat, as well as an automotive survivor :-) - so I know the OTHER side of the biz - making of an automobile - being in an assembly plant is an awesome experience and if you ever have a chance to go see a car being built, jump at it -
Grant Mobielle is also in the business, and he knows his stuff - and brings the biz to life for the layman -
A distinguished auto company has created a car that literally can drive itself and make the right decisions - all in the computer - you can talk to it, let it find your music, and if you are tired, you can program your destination and leave the driving to the car!
BUT - something is happening - there are fatal accidents and all arrows point to the A8 RSCC module that houses the brains.
That can spell disaster to an automotive company, no matter how big.
But all the testing and prototypes were perfect - what happened?
Tom Greenlea, a newly retired AM employee, smells a rat - and he goes about trying to find out the who, why, and where of this mystery - before anything else dire happens.
The ruthless world of corporate sabotage, the backstabbing and innuendos are all part of this business, and Mr. Mobielle deftly plays all sides -
it will keep you guessing who really was the culprit -
All actions surround the backdrop of Detroit - Renaissance Center, and Cobo Center - the darkened assembly plants - all add to the atmosphere and plot -
This is the first of the "Automotive Mysteries" - this series has a bright future -
Remember when you read a Michael Crichton novel he explains everything in detail and then you feel yourself an expert in that field? Like Timeline, almost thinking you can do the quantum physics thing and travel throughout the ages? Well, Mr. Mobielle does the same for the auto industry - without being boring, he shows us how things are and we are able to know how things work in this world.
A great read - lots of fun, feints, adventure and most of all, good reading.

Changing Lanes: An Automotive Mystery
As a real fan of King , Koontz , and Grisham. I found this book to be very good and informative. I knew very little of the Automotive industry until I read this book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Enjoy!

An insider's take on a Detroit mystery4
Grant Mobielle's "Changing Lanes" tells the story of how Tom Greenlea, a barely-retired automotive industry middle manager, helps uncover and prevent a conglomerate of scheming Asian carmakers from taking down his company.

The schemers have a long-range plan: convince some company insiders to plant defective and lethal computer modules into a bunch of the cars, and then sit back and watch the company crumble under the ensuing lawsuits. Mobielle lets us follow Greenlea as he plods through his investigation of how the crime happened, and who the guilty parties are.

I found "Changing Lanes" to be a well-edited, easy to read story. A few red herrings let me to some early false conclusions, and I was kept guessing as to who the company insiders were.

I also found "Changing Lanes" to be educational: Mobielle treats us to a glimpse of the layers upon layers of safety testing and controls that go into the automotive design process. Mixing this in with an engaging story is a great way to learn!
