Product Description

Following Sterling's spectacularly successful launch of its children's classic novels (240,000 books in print to date),comes a dazzling new series: Classic Starts. The stories are abridged; the quality is complete. Classic Starts treats the world's beloved tales (and children) with the respect they deserve--all at an incomparable price.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic tale, with its engaging heroine and evocative description of the Prince Edward Island landscape, never fails to delight youngsters. When Matthew Cuthbert goes to the train station to pick up the orphan he and his sister Marilla plan to adopt, he expects to meet a boy who can help on the family farm. Instead it's Anne--a talkative, dreamy, red-haired, freckle-faced 11-year-old little girl who transforms the Cuthberts' life forever and fills it with love and joy.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-4-A simplified version of the classic story, with a large font and wide spacing. The original plot is loosely mirrored, including Anne's arrival at the Avonlea train depot, Matthew and Marilla's efforts to accept her into their household, Anne's struggles and success in school, and Matthew's death. Essential character traits and resulting conflicts are conveyed-Anne's exuberance and imagination, Matthew's shyness, Marilla's quiet sense of order, and Mrs. Lynde's meddling. Of course many of the original descriptions have been trimmed for simplicity and brevity. Corvino's black-and-white pencil illustrations give readers images of the fashions, hairstyles, and buildings of the day. This serviceable retelling will be appreciated by readers not yet ready for the original work.-Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

Great introduction to literature for children5
This series is a wonderful way to introduce your children to literature. I have an 8 yr old and a 6 year old. All I have to do is read them the first chapter and my 8 year old keep reading to the 6 year old. They have read through this book as well as 8-9 others in this series. Each one keeps them captivated and encourages a love of reading.

Thrilled we discovered this book!5
My daughter was 4 years and 9 months when we started reading Anne of Green Gables. It's been two months, and we've read it probably 5 times. Of course I'm reading it to her...but it is amazing to see how she follows the story, understands the nuances of character, and empathizes with Anne and Marilla, and all the characters. I didn't really consider getting the books in the rest of the series until I realized how well she and I were doing with this one. Now I am excited to share the other great stories with my daughter, like "Treasure Island" and "Huckleberry Finn" and the rest. It's great for my daughter, it's great for me too, to be reminded of these wonderful stories, and I just love sharing all this with her and being there as her imagination is ignited, and to answer her questions about new words and phrases. I am certain her vocabulary and reading comprehension are tremendously impacted by reading these stories with her. She doesn't mind that there are only a few illustrations...what's even better I think, is that she closes her eyes and imagines the scenes and characters, creating them for herself rather than having it done for her. I thought she was too young and that she'd squirm and become disinterested. Lo and behold, we cuddle in her bed, open the book and read until she becomes too sleepy. I let her fold the page so we know where to start the next night. I love being her mom, and I cherish sharing these stories with her and watching her imagination soar.

Great for kids5
I read this with (mostly too) my 6 yr old. I was amazed at how she caught the humor in it. I thought it might be above her. Sweet, well written, and if memory serves, very accurate to the original.
