Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 2–5—Eye-catching, three-dimensional spreads with a smattering of facts introduce six amazing predators. The dramatic pop-ups feature the authors' trademark "swing cards"—elements suspended from the main sculpture that provide a sense of movement and depth. In one scene, a polar bear made from several hanging layers of card stock seems to dance beneath a frozen arch while cubs balance on an undulating ice floe. In another spread, a similarly constructed great white shark lurches out of a grotto with mouth open wide to reveal its gullet as a diver hovers nearby. Unfortunately, the text is occasionally obscured by the movable pieces. A pull-out guide to each animal's hunting style is provided, presenting basic statistics, but no explanation is given for the creature's designated "killer rating" (one to five dots). Brief info about current populations ("Endangered?") is featured, along with a miscellany of other tidbits. Throughout, the tone tends toward the sensational ("like all villains, the crocodile has a faithful friend. The plover bird…."). In the "Spider" entry, the species depicted by the pop-up is not identified, and the text doesn't do justice to the many different ways these animals hunt. The Sundarbans mangrove swamps are mentioned as being famous for man-eating tigers, but most children will not know where the area is located. Still, readers will enjoy the visual fireworks. Prodigious pop-up art5
Wow! This book is pretty spectacular. I give it 5 stars for every aspect, with a caveat related to "who it's for". If it were marketed as a fabulous, fun book for adults, there would be no question on the rating. On the back cover it stipulates "not suitable for children under 36 months". Okay, I am not convinced the average 4, 5, or even 6 year old would be able to thoroughly delve into this book without wrecking it the first time. A very careful child, sure. Also, there are so many elements to each page beyond just the initial pop-up portion. The pages include small sections that can be opened revealing additional pop-up details, for example, a tiger claw. There are also little pull tabs which reveal further facts and items of interest. The price is steep, but more than reasonable for the intense amount of paper engineering. Frankly, I'm surprised it could be done for so little. The colors are rich and luxurious.
My personal favorite page belongs to the polar bear, it's absolutely lovely. And for the reviewer who was wondering how one gets the "world" to open up, yes, it is meant to. Just pull the auxiliary page labeled 'territory' out further and the globe opens right up.

An engineering extravaganza! Architectural marvel! Artistic masterpiece!5
When my children were younger, I delighted in viewing pop-up books with them. I thought they were just about the most creative, unique things around. Some of my happiest memories are the joyous expressions on their little faces as they unfolded the pages to see three-dimensional views of people, animals and various scenes. Priceless moments!

I had not seen a pop-up in years until I came across Predators: A Pop-up Book with Revolutionary Technology. I didn't know what they meant by "revolutionary technology." Revolutionary technology in a book? I thought the raves were most likely so much hype in an effort to sell more books...but how wrong I was!

I could never conceive of such an awesome pop-up book...not in my wildest imagination, and I have a pretty "far-out" imagination myself, as anyone can tell you. But THIS...well this book is beyond awesome!

I'm flabbergasted at the meticulous skill that made this book possible for our youngsters. I just had to get it for our Devon, and can't wait to see his face on Christmas when he sees the creatures that swing off the pages of this book. Of course with a treasure like this, in order not to destroy it, he will have to be supervised and the book put away for when he's old enough to cherish it. But for now, it will be a fun, educational experience to show him these marvelous, exciting animals...to give him an adventure on the "wild side," so to speak.

The spider, complete with intricate webbing, is an engineering feat by itself, but wait until you see the polar bear, the bald eagle and other three-dimensional animals! I can't begin to describe the intricacy of detail in any of the delightful, scary animals in this book, but Amazon has included a video on the product page that depicts the animals in all their glory, complete with their natural habitat. For an inkling of what I'm raving about, check it out, but be prepared for the unexpected. It's fascinating.

Is this book an engineering extravaganza, an architectural marvel, an artistic masterpiece ... or what? You will have to judge for yourself, but I think it's all that and more!

Highly recommended for kids AND parents.

Pure AWESOMEness!4
This is the coolest pop-up book EVER. It has a grand total of a whopping FIVE pages, but they definitely make the most of those pages. Page 1 is a spider dangling and swinging from his intricate web; page 2 illustrates a bald eagle soaring through the clouds; page 3 shows a hungry crocodile with his jaws wide open; page 4 is the swinging, snarling face of a vicious tiger with claws at the ready; page 5 a polar bear and her cubs, two of which are standing on a glacier above a seal swimming in the icy water below.

Each page actually has SO much more than just the animals themselves. There are other hidden animals and pictures waiting to be opened and discovered, as well as bits of information hidden under flaps and printed directly on the pages. As far as the writing goes, the book is very informative and educational, providing info on each animal's habitat, way of life, eating habits and more. Each animal is also rated on an "Endangered" scale from Low Risk to High Risk and it is explained why they are endangered.

I cannot imagine a small child being allowed to play with this book. The pop-ups are so intricate and delicate, I'm almost afraid to try and figure out how they work. The tiger really had me stumped at first, but then I realized that you have to pull it forward, pull out the back flaps, and then the face is able to swing and move. I still can't figure out how to get the earth to open up on the last page. (Maybe it's not supposed to?)

Part of my polar bear scenery has already disassembled itself, but it was easy enough to put back together. You have to be VERY VERY careful with opening and closing the pages in order to keep it in good working condition, for sure.

Adult supervision is absolutely required for small children, but fun will be had by ALL when paging through it!
