Bridge
Bridge can be a daunting game. This book helped to take that fear away and get me started. OK - maybe you won't be playing like a pro in one hour - but the most important thing is to get started and then practice. This book takes you by the hand with step by step instructions and photos to make it easy. Bridge is a challenging, complicated, and intellectual game and it was intimidating for me. Not anymore - thanks to this author!!!
Great, easy way to learn bridge!!
Finally! An easy way to learn such a great game! Too many books and classes make bridge seem so complicated and intimidating -- and, unfortunately, turn many people away from learning to play bridge. I am so pleased to see that someone has finally put together a quick and easy way to learn this game. The book is easy to follow and written with a friendly, conversational voice. You feel like Mr. Riad is sitting at the table right next to you, cards in hand, walking you through the logical steps. I have found his method to be especially useful in teaching others how to play bridge. Bridge needs to make a come back! And, hopefully, this book might make that happen.
Learn bridge in 1 hour - teaches non-standard bridge.
First, the title is misleading - it took me more than an hour to simply browse thought the book. Yes, the first couple of chapters get the learner playing a trick-taking card game but it is not bridge. This is the standard way most bridge courses begin and that's about all that can be learned in one hour.
Secondly, the reader is not learning standard bidding from this book. In attempting to simplify the game, the author teaches many things that anyone who plays the game will have to unlearn. No mention is made of this fact.
In additon to non-standard bidding, the hand diagrams are also not the standard you see in any other publications.
In suggesting a line of play, the author sometimes does not take the best line - and there is no justification for playing the way he does even for a new player.
As a bridge teacher, I would definintely tell any prospective student not to waste money on this book.
