I want a pony.

I want a pony more than anything in the world.

A little girl who longs for a pony draws pictures of a dappled mare she names Silver, then rides her through a magical countryside in her dreams.  At the heart of Susan Jeffers's exquisite picture book lies the idea that in her imagination, a child can journey anywhere and do anything- even fly through the stars on her very own pony...

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-The pigtailed narrator of this enchanting story wants a pony of her own. Her parents tell her that a horse is too expensive and that they don't have enough room, so she draws pictures of a horse. Her art takes her to a magical world where she rides a beautiful, dappled silver horse through forests and clouds. When she returns from her journey, she is happy because her imaginary animal "waits just outside my window. Always." In an author's note, Jeffers tells how her own longing for a horse led her to drawing. The sense of longing permeates the spare text but is softened by the beautiful, pastel watercolor-and-ink artwork. The dreamlike quality of the semitransparent horses and of the fantastic backgrounds is heightened by glossy ivory paper. This is a book that horse lovers will cherish.

From Booklist
K-Gr. 2. In this partly autobiographical picture book, Jeffers recounts the story of a young unnamed girl who dreams of having a pony. Her parents explain that ponies are expensive and require a great deal of space, but the child's longing doesn't go away. To compensate, the girl begins drawing a pony, Silver, who comes to life, spiriting the child on a fantasy ride--cantering to join a herd of horses, galloping through a mountain stream, and finally flying back through the night sky to the girl's bedroom. Jeffers' signature artwork captures the imaginative tone of the story, and the fantasy scenes are reminiscent of her earlier work with single-volume fairy tales, such as Hansel and Gretel (1980). In a note, Jeffers explains her own love of horses and art, which began as a child and continues even now. This quiet, beautifully rendered book will be a good choice for story hours as well as for one-on-one sharing with would-be artists and equestrians. Kay Weisman

Delightful, One I don't mind reading every night5
My Pony/horse obsessed 3 yr-old daughter received this on Christmas eve from her Aunt and just loves it. It is one of those books that is just mesmerizing to her. It has also been helpful in showing her that she can have "her pony" in her imagination as well. It is really a sweet tale that has already been described in detail so I will simply leave it at that.

A wonderful book for horse lovers, young and old alike5
My Pony is a wonderfully enchanting story of a young girls dream of having her own pony. Each night when the young girl is supposed to be doing her homework, she dreams of riding her pony. The pony, Silver, comes to life when the young girl draws the beautiful dapples and shiny coat. Together at last, the girl and Silver ride the clouds and visit a fantasy world.
Susan Jeffers latest story is beautifully illustrated and eloquently narrated. The words of the story combined with awesome illustrations seem to drip like honey off of the pages of this book. Jeffers has done a spectacular job. This book is filled with whimsical fantasy allowing the reader to escape to a world filled with beauty and wonder.
This book is told from the young girls point of view and the reader will quickly become lost in the story. Even though this book is keyed to young girls, old girls are sure to revel in it as well. This book would be highly recommended and considered a valuable addition to any childrens library. The breathtaking illustrations, done in fine line pen and watercolor, make a significant contribution to be viewed as an example of art for children.

Perfect Book For Horse Lovers Of All Ages5
Beautiful illustrations and nice story too. Little girl in
story longs for a horse. Gets one in her dreams. Author's
own childhood desire for a horse was the inspiration for
her artistic talent at drawing horses. She states that she
now owns horses and tries to ride every day. Inspiring
message for horse lovers. Never give up on dreams!
