Gr 5-7--This collection of seven short stories by different authors features breathless narrations, weird situations, and shocker endings. The tales rely more on grotesque incidents and gruesome conclusions than on suspenseful story lines. Plot logic often suffers as well. The narrator of ``The Layout'' relates the entire story of his encounter with a cursed model train set-up before revealing that he is trapped and paralyzed inside it. Observant readers will wonder how he is able to write the story at all. The young characters are not an admirable crew. In ``Like a Charm,'' two sisters mock a friend and end up transformed into charms on her bracelet. The aspiring cheerleader in ``Bloody Cheer'' goes to cruel lengths to eliminate her rival from competition, unaware that the other girl is a ruthless vampire with evil designs of her own. Like the victims in many a B-movie, these characters also show incredible naivete in walking into obviously menacing situations. Despite three murders, a warning from his sheriff father, and a prophecy from his witchlike grandmother about ``The Hangmen of Willow Glen,'' a boy still stakes out the cemetery and, of course, becomes the fourth casualty. Skip this one and purchase additional copies of fiction by John Bellairs and Vivian Alcock instead.
