Hot, skillfully written, and not for the faint of heart
In the chapters of _Sensuous Magic: A Guide to S/M for Adventurous Couples_, Patrick Califia alternates between the roles of intelligent sex-ed instructor and teller of lascivious tales. If the world is a just place, then _Sensuous Magic_ surely earned him masses of enthusiastic fan mail begging for more of the latter (oh, please, Sir!), to follow his previous erotic fiction collections _Macho Sluts_, _Melting Point_, _No Mercy_, and _Hard Men_. _Boy in the Middle_ is his latest answer to that plea. In his new book, shapeshifting Califia once again demonstrates his skill at getting inside the skin of an amazing variety of characters. He offers eleven steamy and tightly-crafted tales, each different from the others. I warn you, this one-handed reading is not for the faint of heart. It brings to life a wide variety of queer scenarios, vampire tales and s&m stories. These subjects will not suit all readers. But Califia's fans will find his style in top form, with its surprises, humor, and human touches. I especially like the range of ways the characters solve the dilemma of having only one imperfect body in which to live out multiple sexes and fantasies. I suppose the title _Boy in the Middle_ refers to the multifarious scenarios and sexualities that a "boy" of whatever gender might get into. (This is not a book about threesomes, though if Califia wrote one it would surely be scorching -- Patrick, are you listening?). _Boy in the Middle_ is a gift from a guy who has done some hard thinking about sex, who writes well and knows how to put together a hot story. This is a rare combination. Enjoy it if you dare.
