Introduction: "A Fantastic Kind of Pain"

Just as I have a seemingly endless capacity to bare my ass and get it smacked soundly or make a squirming bottom hover on the edge of erotic oblivion with loud, ringing, stinging whack after whack, I don't think I'll ever get tired of reading stories about spanking. There was a time when I wasn't sure I could say that; after all, just how much is there to say about bending over and letting a firm hand connect with a pertly offered-up bottom? Or striking a pretty pair of buttcheeks so well the person beneath you moans in ecstatic agony? Well, as I've learned while editing this collection, there are an infinite number of ways to talk about the pleasures of getting spanked or spanking someone. While the actions may look alike, we all experience them differently and have different motives for indulging in this beloved kinky activity.

Me? I get off on just thinking about bending over for that special someone. Maybe I'm wearing panties, and only part of my bottom is visible. Maybe I'm not, and my spanker can see everything, including my wetness. I get wet at the mere idea of offering up my entire body to a lover to play with, tease, spank, and arouse. I've also had plenty of eager bottoms spread before me, offering asses that just begged to be spanked, whether they speak words to that effect or not. But for me, and for many others, spanking is about much more than just the physical. It's about what that sensation creates inside of us. Spanking breaks down our barriers in ways even sex sometimes doesn't; it stirs up emotions; it makes us whimper or cry, or be proud of just how much we can take. It's primal and powerful, not to mention incredibly popular. I was thrilled to see spanking make an appearance on Showtime's Californication, where the bratty, bossy bottom of a secretary demands that her boss spank her for any office infraction. "Hit Me Baby One More Time," indeed.

And those who bestow spankings, whether with hands, paddles, hairbrushes, or other devices, relish that power to bring pleasure and pain mixed together, to completely undo the person they are spanking with just a few (or possibly many) whacks.

Fun & easy to read!5
Rachel obviously put a lot of time and effort into this collection. Not only are they all highly readable and entertaining in their own right, but the progression of the stories seems so natural. It's almost as if they were all written by the same author and always intended to be part of a book. And that's amazing, considering that the stories are diverse and written by 19 different authors, including Rachel herself.

The first story, "Spanking You" by Rick Roberts, struck me as the most vanilla and easily accessible by someone new to this genre. So it was a brilliant way to lead off the series. Each succeeding story seemed to be more intense, explicit, and unconventional. I don't know if this organization was conscious or unconscious. I don't know even know whether other readers would agree with my assessment. But it was definitely my perception - and I thought it worked.

My favorite lead paragraph was provided by Madeline Glass in "Laser Tag":

"The first time he spanked me, I thought he was a pervert. The second time he did it, I wondered if I was. By the third time, I was certain that we both were."

Readers of this book might undergo a similar progression:

"After the first story, I thought Rachel was a pervert. Reading the second story, I wondered if I was. By the third story, I was certain that we both were."

Incidentally, I was a little concerned that this book would "only" be about spanking. But rest assured, there are many other forms of sensuality and eroticism displayed in the stories (all of which are enhanced by spanking), and there are orgasms aplenty.

Finally, I'd say one key reason why these stories work is that they are almost all set in familiar places - bookstores, concerts, kitchens, etc. That made it much easier for me to imagine myself participating in the scenes - which I did for almost all of these stories.

A decadent pleasure5
The tantalizing variety of stories in this spanking-themed anthology are like rich chocolates, with each delectable morsel leaving the reader wanting just one more bite. Rachel Kramer Bussel has put together a fabulous collection of stories in Spanked. She proves-- once again-- that she is not only an outstanding author, but a shrewd editor with a keen sense of pacing that leaves the reader eagerly anticipating the next story.

Among my favorite stories in this collection are Shanna Germain's shiveringly good "Perfect Bound," Alison Tyler's naughty-but-oh-so-nice "Betty Crocker Gone Bad" and Donna George Storey's teasing confessional "A Rare Find." Speaking of rare finds, I was also pleased to discover some new-to-me authors in the lineup, including Rick Roberts. Roberts' delightful "Spanking You" opens the anthology and sets the tone for a variety of delicious intimacies.

Spanked is one of those books you will want to share with the one you love... or the ones you know love spankings!

I'd give this a 10-star rating if Amazon offered it!5
You would think I'd get tired of gushing about Rachel Kramer Bussel books. You'd be wrong. I am not sure how she seduces the best writers to produce their finest, hottest, and sexiest material, but perhaps--like the making of sausages or laws--I'm better off not knowing. The book's photo cover is glossy and gorgeous and it's one time when you really can judge a book by its cover. Cleis Press did a fine job putting out this collection.

This anthology tells you right away what you can expect, and I like that. Rachel's intro talks about her love of spanking and being spanked, and she delves into what makes the process so erotic. Some of my favorite stories from the book are Alison Tyler's "Betty Crocker Gone Bad," a sexy tale that combines nudity, cookies, spanking, and a kitchen timer! Alison's stories never fail to thrill (and satisfy), so it's not surprising this one made the cut.

Madlyn March's "Reunion" is another high-quality pick. Well-crafted and believable, with a bottom-tingling retribution spanking. If lesbian spanking is your turn-on, this one is guaranteed to please. It has a nice balance of humor as well.

"Pink Cheeks" by Fiona Locke has a classic spanking enthusiast's fantasy scripted to a T. This one is already dog-eared from multiple readings. The dialogue is wonderful and it's a sweet story.

Rosalind Christine Lloyd's "Logan" is another girl-girl spanking story, with an unusual twist. It plays into many sexual fantasies: blindfolds, threesomes, tattoos, dirty talk...nothing there not to enjoy.

Last, but(t) by no means least, is Rachel's own submission, "The Depths of Despair." I've always enjoyed Rachel's writing and this piece is no exception. This story is a bit darker than some others in the collection, to great effect. It has a lovely ending, and really carries the reader through the protagonist's experiences. The perfect closer for a perfect book.

Bravo, Rachel, bravo.
