Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-These series entries threaten to do for fantasy what "The American Girl Collection" (Pleasant) has done for American history. Four girls find costumes and a mirror in a neighbor's attic. A look in the magic glass takes one or all of them on an adventure, where they stay until they look in another mirror, at which point they are returned to the attic. Secret explains the formula; if children read Heather first, they will be mystified by the sketchy writing. The friends all seem alike, because their characterizations are glued to their outsides. Alison is the jock; Keisha the African American who celebrates Kwanzaa; Megan the reader who quotes Shakespeare; Heather the Jewish ballerina wannabe. But their contributions to the conversations are all the same-an annoying mixture of pseudo-sophistication and moralistic goodness. Readers are encouraged to emulate these people: there's a postcard at the back of each book inviting them to join the club and get their own key and a free glossy catalogue from which they may order merchandise. An opportunistic, hollow package.?Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME

Heather at the Barre4
The book was so amazing. My 10 year old daughter enjoyed it immensely, she could not put it down until the very end. It was nice to see her get into a book as much as she did with this one.

Good, but a little un-realistic4
I enjoyed this book. It had a good plot and was entertaining. Heather puts on a ballet costume and toe shoes and then is transported to New York to dance in a ballet by a magic mirror. I dance ballet and am on pointe myself and found a couple faults in the story. Heather lies to her friends about being on pointe but when she puts on the toe shoes in the attic she dances almost flawlessly. In real life though it takes months to dance without the support of a barre. Then her friend Jillian helps her break in her shoes with a hammer, but you're supposed to break them in by dancing in them and gently bending the soles of the shoes. Breaking them in any other ways could permently damage them. I would still recomend the book, though.

An excellent book especially for people who do ballet.5
I think this book is one of the best books I have read. It's about Heather going to the attic and finding herself as a guest star in Sleeping Beauty. She sprains her ankle,so she can't dance. In the end,she learns a lesson. I do ballet myself, but I'm not on toe yet.
