Victoria selected four round stones from the box, each of different color, and arranged them diagonally like a cross. Now she spun the Magician card and noted where the hat pointed, always at one of the four colored stones. Inhaling deeply from the pipe, she said,

"I see jealousy and envy here. And also sadness." This was at the red stone."

She spun the card again until it pointed at the blue stone.

"Here there is only love and affection. It has lasted a long time."

"I would not ask you this unless I really needed to, but I want you to seduce Juan Garcia. Can you do this for me?"

"Oh Maria, how could you ask this?"

"I have my reasons and they are very good but I cannot tell you."

"Don't worry about paying me, if the reasons are good, even though I don't know them, I'll do it as your friend, besides Ana is not my friend, she's always been a little distant to me. Besides, Juan is handsome."

Customer Reviews

Jay Smith captures the complexities of Iquitos in The Necklace5
I have lived and worked in Iquitos for five years and THE NECKLACE will give the reader an idea of living in this very interesting place. Iquitos is an impoverished city with a half million residents stranded in the middle of the Amazon Jungle. A very unique culture has evolved here due to this isolation from the outside world, a culture which is captured brilliantly by Jay Smith in his new short story, The Necklace. The Necklace exposes the contradictions of living in paradise and cleverly touches upon the darker side of Iquitos life, including jealousy, sorcery, deception, and revenge. The Necklace is easy to read and will keep the reader engaged to the end.

Jungle Vengeance5
Jay Smith's THE NECKLACE will seduce the reader with its vivid descriptions of witchcraft and revenge in Iquitos, Peru. The mystery intensifies as the main characters engage in typical jungle retribution, which includes theft, lies, seduction, sex and more sex. After reading this steamy Amazon short, you will want to visit Iquitos.

A real feel for Equitos5
The images of earthy, well-developed characters that inhabit the steamy and sultry city of Iquitos Peru make this book a delight to read. Although the chapters are linear, the action crisscrosses rapidly among both characters and venues, keeping the reader speculating about what will happen next in the mystery. One hates to reach the end of a book like this, because the identification with the characters is genuine. The descriptions of Latino festivals and culture are fascinating and leave the reader wanting to experience more of this unusual city.
