Not quite there...
I love Lora Leigh books because they're off the beaten erotica path...slightly dark, definitely steamy. This book, unlike the Men Of August series (which I highly recommend), leaves something to be desired.
What was pulled off rather effectively in the afforementioned series, here falls short. The Alpha male lead, Slade, comes across as a high handed and arrogant bully. The heroine comes across as young, whiny and completely unable to assert herself in the face of the what we are to believe is his overwhelming man-ness. She's supposed to be his sensual equal, but she needs to be babysat by his two best friends to avoid sex with the wrong man? yeah right.
Were the August men damaged? yes. Possessive? yes. Seeking redemption? yes...but Slade being condescending and dismismissive? that's just not sexy.
I understand this is the beginning of a new series, so hopefully the next one will scratch the itch this one just didn't seem to reach.
Frustratingly weak female.
I usually like LL's writing, but this book is a stinker.
Jessie, Jessie, Jessie - one of the weakest, most pathetic women I have ever had the displeasure of reading about. While yes, we knew from the beginning that eventually they would get back together, she could have been a little less pathetic. After Slade break's her heart, she moves into his apartment, buys his RV and is still wearing his clothes five years later....I just about puked. The sex scenes were hot but the female lead....just sad.
Versatile writer
I started reading Lora Leigh through her paranormal stories that are offered through Ellora's Cave. She is a prolific writer, who knows how to blend romance, intrigue, angst and erotica quite seamlessly. This book was no exception. If you are not into paranormal, but you are into steamy contemporary, I strongly recommend Loving Lies. While somewhat tamer than her Ellora's Cave contemporaries--some truly push the envelope--this book is no less engaging and will have you hooked. Her females are strong women, they aren't afraid to go after what they want but are also strong enough to back away and stand up for what they believe to be right. Her males are complicated, sometimes tortured alpha's that you can't help loving even as you mentally curse their stupidity. Enjoy!!
