Pets are cheap. Beautiful, intelligent, loyal pets who arch into the lash and beg to be ridden hard are not so cheap. Alix was a simple musician, a delicate man with hair the color a blue sky and eyes full of life and curiosity, and who had no desire to be taken by the 'gods'. Captain Tristan Yarril did not want a pet to replace the one he'd lost. He would be Master to none. He'd rather share his bed with fading dreams. His crew has other ideas and Alix is to be come Tristan's new pet. Innocent and virginal, responsive and beautiful he is presented as a birthday gift. Loneliness and fear soon mute into passion and love for them, but there is a coming civil war in Captain Yarril's world and soon lives, both free and slave, will be worth less than the energy it takes to incinerate them. One master. One slave. And a love that could change the meaning of freedom forever.

SciFi/Fantasy
This story was a great blend of Science Fiction and Fantasy. As the other reviewer noted, there are vampires and fairies, but they exist in an intergalatic, space-faring society. The idea of sex slaves is not new, but genetically engineered "pets" is a fresh and original take on the idea. They exist on their own world, and become pets when the "gods" choose them to serve. Only, Alix didn't want to be chosen.
Tristan soon comes to realize that his new pet, Alix, is more than he seems and more than he should be. Alix loves his new master, but is more independent-minded than his genetics should allow. This makes it possible for a touching love story to develop. Nix Winter doesn't just throw some technology around and call it a plot; there is action, adventure and intrigue to go along with the hot sex. Tristan is a noble as well as a ship captain and when he returns to court, politics and scheming abound. And, readers should know there is some light BDSM. Alix is a pet who "needs" to be punished at times. The book is the first 5 parts of a series, and the author is working on the subsequent episodes. So, the ending does leave readers wanting more.
My only problem with the book is that is suffers from a lot of typos and some grammatical errors. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. This can interrupt the flow of the book, but the story is good enough I was willing to move past them. Hopefully, the next installment will be better edited as I really want to read more about Alix and Tristan. Recommended.
Master and his designer (human) pet
Captain Tristan Yarril has been low since losing his pet, but did not want another to replace it, yet his crew knew better and choose Alix, a particularly attractive pale skinned blue haired new pet for him. Eighteen year old Alix, a beautiful and delicate slim bodied creature, almost androgynous in looks, yet definitely male, like all pets had been breed especially for the role with the need to serve, satisfy and be trained by his master. Despite Tristan's wariness, pet and master soon become bound by a deep love and trust; but Alix proves to be more spirited than a pet should be, and this could prove significant as Tristan's world faces war, intrigue and betrayal.
In addition to Tristan we also encounter a Pirate, Evander, whose crew also provide with a pet or two, to use and discard or keep as he will.
A fascinating story populated by a variety of creatures including, in addition to designer pets, vampires, serving fairies and other composite beings, in a universe were strange powers exist, and not all action takes place in the physical world.
A strange, magical and erotic tale, the interaction and devotion between pet and master is especially alluring.
This volume contains episodes one to five, but the story is not complete, there hopefully being more to follow; and no doubt we will then begin learn the connection between the many varied characters and events, some of which for the present seem to stand in isolation.
Well worth reading for the attentions lavished by the master on his beautiful and responsive pet.
The Pet
Alix, the former Pet of Captain Tristan Yarrill of The Raver (Lord Yarill on his home planet of Centri'menimas } has been inadvertently promoted to Lord Harper, by Queen Yraine. Yraine, who is vainly maneuvering to cloak her planetary system from the scrutiny of invading alien forces, insists that Alix accompany her to the Palace for a ten-day stay. At the end of that period, Alix should be free to leave and to wed Tristan.
Alix fears the Queen, because a voice in a dream has told him to choose and he wishes to remain with Tristan, whom he has grown to trust and love. What neither Tristan nor Alix realize is that their separation has been engineered, and is much more dangerous than even Tristan could imagine. The voice from the dream again speaks in Alix's mind, telling him to run, that he will be helped; but once he is captive in the Queen's shuttle, who will be able to help him now? The Queen is no longer in command; she has sold out to the Earth military. Alix is to be shipped to a research station and vivisected to locate traces of the alien species, the Di'Jigh. Yraine will be transported to Earth, but her home world and its satellite planets will be overrun and destroyed.
Once again Ms. Winter and Ms. Massa examine the convolutions of slavery in freedom, freedom in slavery, and the trust that provides the foundation for love. As with the earlier Episodes of The Pet {The Pet Episodes 1, 2, 3; and The Pet 4: Tristan's Loss}, The Pet 5 is a fascinating, nearly hypnotic novella, that compelled me into suspension of disbelief and entrance into an entirely new Universe. I highly recommend this entry into the series; each can be read as a stand-alone novella, although reading them in sequence is a pure pleasure. I rate this one hot for explicit language, BDSM and m/m sexuality.
